About this specimen

Inner Mongolia gypsum desert rose at 6.3 cm; a small cabinet piece. The supplier did not record a weight.

Desert roses are rosettes of bladed gypsum or baryte crystals that grew in arid sand, trapping grains between the petals; the Mexican and Saharan examples are classics.

Selenite-variety gypsum is transparent enough to read through and cleaves into thin sheets; keep it dry and out of direct sun.

The Huanggangliang skarn district of Inner Mongolia is one of the great mineral finds of the 21st century, known for fluorite, calcite, garnet and rare species.

Dimensions place it in the small cabinet range, 6.3 × 5.4 × 5.3 cm (2.48 × 2.13 × 2.09 in). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.

Water-sensitive: keep dry and never wash.
