About this specimen
Pale lilac crystals cover this Guizhou plate in overlapping fans, each a small flattened spear with a chisel tip, leaning into its neighbours until the whole surface looks frosted. Saffron-yellow crusts fill the low ground between them, several soft powdery patches of it, and a group of grey-tan blades stands proud at the centre where the coating thins away.
Gypsum is CaSO4·2H2O and the softest mineral most collectors keep: Mohs 2, monoclinic, scratchable with a fingernail and easily dulled by wiping. A lilac tint carried evenly through an entire crust is uncommon, since most gypsum arrives colourless, white or amber, and the yellow crusts hand the piece a second colour without a scrap of polishing being involved. Store it dry but not baked — gypsum slowly loses its water and goes chalky in a hot, arid case.
The plate is 7.4 × 4.8 × 3.8 cm and 90 g, unmounted and stable lying flat. Nothing in these photographs belongs to another specimen: what is shown is what ships.
