About this specimen
Frost on rust: hair-fine gypsum needles bristle from a dark chocolate-brown crust in two dense pom-poms, with a looser spray spilling between them. The needles are colourless and glassy where they catch the light and take on a warm amber cast where they lie flat against the matrix, and the whole surface glitters at the slightest tilt of the hand.
Gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) is among the softest minerals a collector will ever own — Mohs 2, marked by a fingernail — and acicular sprays like these are its most fragile expression. They grew into open cavities, water-thin crystals radiating from a shared point until they met rock. Keep the piece dry, since gypsum is slightly soluble, and clear dust with a puff of air or a very soft brush rather than a cloth, which will snap needles off by the dozen.
The specimen runs 6.6 × 2.5 × 3.8 cm and weighs 50 g. Shot in the hand and unmounted, exactly as it will arrive.
