Over dit exemplaar
Gitzwarte cassiterietkristallen bezetten een nest van strokleurig mica; hun vlakken zijn helder genoeg om het licht terug te werpen als gepolijste antraciet. Het muscoviet waaiert eromheen uit in overlappende boeken en rozetten, van champagne tot bleek lichtbruin, en sluit zich over de zwarte groep alsof het mica eromheen is opgegroeid.
Xuebaoding in Sichuan is de vindplaats achter cassiteriet van dit type: tinrijke vloeistoffen trokken door omgezet graniet en zetten SnO2 af in holtes die al met mica bekleed waren. Cassiteriet is zwaar voor zijn formaat, met een soortelijk gewicht van bijna 7, en hard met 6–7 volgens Mohs, dus de kristallen zelf zijn robuust – maar muscoviet splijt onder druk in vellen, en het mica is wat te lijden heeft als het stuk ruw wordt behandeld.
