白垩白的叶片自单一根部向外展开，每一片都罩着一层糖霜般的微晶壳而显得黯淡，整簇因此雾面无光——只有一片清澈玻璃质的叶片自后方透出，接住了光。 两三个晶面上黏着暗灰绿色的污痕，是这件雪亮标本上唯一的颜色。
霰石与方解石有着相同的化学式 CaCO3，却把它组装在斜方晶系里；它习惯以三个个体双晶连生，长出来的模样常让人误以为是六方晶体。 这件贵州标本上的霜面，是后一代极细小的霰石针状晶体长在早期叶片之上，正是这层东西把一种透明矿物变成不透明。 莫氏硬度 3.5 至 4，尖端脆弱：请用气流除尘，绝不要用布擦。
它量得 4.6 × 4.1 × 3.6 cm，仅重 45 g，并安放在照片中的透明压克力方座上，把晶簇抬离层板。 方座随件附上；此页上也没有任何一张照片是替身，您拆开的就是这一件。
