标本中央一处蓝铜矿晶洞闪闪发亮，蓝得极为饱和，随着光线移动在电光蓝与海军蓝之间摆荡；数以千计的微小锥面衬满整个空腔，那份闪烁正是它们同时反光的结果。 草绿色的孔雀石在洞缘结成薄壳与小颗葡萄状团块，母岩则是深沉的铁染褐色，把蓝色向前推了出来。
这两种矿物在化学上只差一步。 蓝铜矿的化学式为 Cu3(CO32(OH)2，是两者中较不稳定的一方，会缓慢吸水转变为孔雀石，这也是为什么同一件标本上绿色常常镶在蓝色边上。 请避免长时间直晒与干热环境以减缓这项变化，并且绝不可水洗——像这样的晶簇，最多只能承受一支柔软的干毛刷。
