这件秘鲁晶簇上有半数黄铁矿晶面已暗转为枪铁色，其余仍燃着黄铜般的光亮，正是这种分裂让它在房间另一端仍抓得住目光。 晶体属五角十二面体——五边形晶面以平缓的角度相接，最大者接近 1.5 cm——彼此楔得极紧，只留下狭窄的缝隙供石英发挥。
黄铁矿是二硫化铁，FeS2，而秘鲁的多金属矿脉正是这般棱角分明晶体的经典产地；五角十二面体也比日常可见的黄铁矿立方体更为少见。 莫氏硬度 6 至 6.5 听来耐用，但黄铁矿性脆，受撞时棱角会崩缺。 顶面上的暗色锈华只是薄薄一层表面氧化，若标本保存在潮湿处便会扩散——请放在干燥的层架上，切勿使用超音波清洗。
晶簇尺寸 6.0 × 5.0 × 4.0 cm，重 200 g，是单手好握的份量，照片中以指间持握呈现比例。 不附底座。 上方每一张照片拍的都是这同一件晶簇。
