About this specimen
Hubei pyrite at 2 cm; a thumbnail, supplied in the display box shown. Pyrite crystals in bright brass cluster together with their cube faces set at angles, so the group throws a hard metallic glint from several directions at once.
Iron sulfide with a brass-gold colour, pyrite is heavy, bright and geometrically satisfying, with striated faces on the best crystals.
Hubei's Daye copper-iron mines are famous for calcite, and the province also produces fluorite and quartz from its mountain districts.
Dimensions place it in the thumbnail range, 2 × 2 × 1.7 cm (0.79 × 0.79 × 0.67 in). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
