淡绿松石色的半球挤满这件云南霰石的展示面——约有十来枚，每一枚都是一束发丝般的细针自一点扇形散开，直到整个面都化为丝绒。 颜色介于鸭蛋青与冰川蓝之间，在较大的球心处略微加深。 沿着边缘有几簇白色针晶自蓝色中逸出，而它们共同生长其上的深色铁质岩，则在两三处窗口透出。
霰石（CaCO3）与方解石化学成分相同，却结晶成斜方晶系，因此偏好纤维状、放射状的形态，而不是块状的菱面体。 那份蓝一般归因于孕育它的流体中微量的铜。 莫氏硬度 3.5–4，针尖极易压碎：请托着母岩拿取，切勿擦拭球面。
