一枚不比李子大的淡蓝绿色圆丘，表面如揉皱的天鹅绒：这件云南霰石由极细的针状晶体构成，密织到整层结壳看来如同麂皮，直到光线落上，整个表面才开始闪烁。 蓝色自顶部到边缘匀净如一，只有在结壳脱离母岩的断口处才转为白色。
霰石与方解石共用同一化学式 CaCO3，差别只在原子的堆叠方式——霰石属斜方晶系，倾向纤维状、针状的生长；方解石属三方晶系，晶形方正。 正是这种结构上的偏好造就了此处的绒面。 莫氏硬度 3.5 至 4，针尖脆弱：以吹气或软毛刷除尘即可，切勿冲水。
结壳宽 4.6 cm，高 4.1 cm，厚 2.5 cm，重 80 g，如图陈列于小型透明压克力座上。 此处每一张照片，都只拍摄这一件标本。
