關於此標本
光線沿著這枚晶體流下，化作一道道細密的平行絲線——數十條柱面凹槽，把一塊黑色礦物變得更接近拉絲鋼。晶柱粗壯而非細長，頂端以低矮、略微偏心的錐面收尾，而不是折斷的殘樁。在薄邊透光之處，黑色會短暫敞開，露出溫暖的沙士棕。
黑電氣石是電氣石系列中富鐵的端員：三方晶系，莫氏硬度 7–7.5，硬得足以放心上手。那些縱向條紋是這個家族的招牌——柱面以狹窄交錯的條帶方式生長，而非單一平坦的面，所以轉動時沒有兩個側面會同時閃光。電氣石還具有真正的熱電性：加熱晶體，兩端便會聚集相反的電荷。
晶體尺寸 4.6 × 2.8 × 2.8 cm，重 65 g，拍攝時以博物館黏土立於透明壓克力座上。照片拍的就是這枚晶體，別無他件。
