融合的瘤狀體彼此攀疊，宛如一柱琥珀色花椰菜，表面每一平方毫米都佈滿細小的尖狀晶端，迎光時閃出砂糖般的細碎光澤。顏色由脊部的暖蜜色過渡到凹處更深的焦糖色，最薄的晶尖懸出之處則呈半透明的稻草色邊緣。
雲南正產出這種形態的碳酸鹽結殼——由緩慢滲流的地下水沉積而成、頂端呈玫瑰狀的渾圓集合體。霰石與方解石共用同一化學式 CaCO3，差別僅在原子的堆疊方式，因此這樣的標本無法用肉眼分辨；在做過正式檢測之前，我們誠實地標示為霰石／方解石。無論屬於何者，它都偏軟，莫氏硬度約 3 至 4，怕酸，也怕碰撞。
