對著光舉起，這枚方解石轉為煙色——一枚塊狀的單晶，灰褐色調，內部貫穿著混濁的白色斑塊與細細的鏽紅色絲線，彷彿懸浮在石頭中央。削出斜面的頂緣以修長筆直的線條閃著玻璃般的亮光，內部卻依舊柔和瀰漫，使這件標本同時看來既紮實又朦朧。
安徽產出的方解石多是這樣厚重的幾何單晶，而不是纖細的晶叢。內部的閃光並非裂隙，而是解理：碳酸鈣 CaCO3 在三個方向上解理完全，晶體內部初生的解理面便如同一面面小小的內在鏡子。莫氏硬度 3，銅幣即可留下刻痕，遇酸則會受蝕——請讓醋、除垢劑與家用清潔劑遠遠避開它。
