一隻綠色的眼睛自灰色之中望出。這件剛果孔雀石的拋光面是一組同心色帶——最緊密的環帶是深玉綠，接著是祖母綠，再來是明亮的藍綠色——環繞著兩個偏離中心的靶心，位置恰如瞳孔。切面以外的一切皆維持原礦狀態：一層霜面的淡鼠尾草灰外皮，顯示出為了抵達這番景象，只需取走何等微少的部分。
孔雀石，Cu2CO3(OH)2，隨著含銅的水穿行於碳酸鹽岩之中，以細密的葡萄狀層理堆積生長，每一次化學脈動都鋪下略有差異的一層綠。橫切這些層理，色帶便讀作環紋；環紋越緊密，代表結核的該部位生長得越緩慢。莫氏硬度 3.5–4，既容易拋出鏡面光澤，也同樣容易被刮傷，因此在抽屜中請讓它遠離更硬的標本。
這件標本量得 5.3 × 3.6 × 2.4 cm，重 160 g，圖中以一枚透明壓克力方塊托住，使拋光面直立呈現。此處的每一張照片，拍的都是這一片切件。
