一頂杏橙色的小傘蓋在細窄的褐色柄上展開，整件高度不過一個指節。方解石表面呈粒狀而非玻璃感——成千上萬個細小的晶體錐面，密集堆成圓潤的乳突狀結殼——而傘蓋邊緣掀起之處，底下露出一枚更具玻璃感的蜜色晶體，接住了其餘部位所漫射掉的光。
乳突狀方解石會在它所遇到的任何基底上層層向外生長，邊長邊圓，而不是築起獨立的菱面體。溫暖的橙色調通常歸因於隨 CaCO3 一同帶入的微量鐵。方解石莫氏硬度 3，三個方向完全解理，且遇酸會起反應，所以它同樣厭惡壓力、醋和家用清潔劑；保養的全部功夫，就是一支柔軟的乾刷。
