Hubei petal calcite with iridescent pyrite at 17.5 cm and 1338 g; a large cabinet plate.
Calcium carbonate in its rhombohedral form, calcite is soft (Mohs 3) and takes a bright vitreous to pearly lustre on fresh faces.
Pyrite grows as cubes, pyritohedra and octahedra with a brassy metallic lustre; Chinese pyrite is known for sharp, mirror-faced crystals.
Hubei's Daye copper-iron mines are famous for calcite, and the province also produces fluorite and quartz from its mountain districts.
The piece is large cabinet in size, 17.5 × 15 × 7.5 cm (6.89 × 5.91 × 2.95 in) and 1338 g (47.2 oz). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.
