About this specimen

Honey runs through every crystal on this small Hunan plate. The calcites are gemmy and warm-gold, the largest taking up close to a third of the face, its surfaces stepping down in flat glassy terraces; smaller siblings crowd behind, transparent enough that the dark matrix reads through their bases. Where light catches a leading edge the yellow deepens to amber.

Calcite is the shape-shifter of the mineral kingdom, and this blocky, steeply terminated growth is one of hundreds of forms it takes. It is also soft — Mohs 3 — and cleaves cleanly in three directions, so a knock removes a flake rather than dulling a corner. Dilute acid attacks it, ruling out vinegar-based cleaners and ultrasonic baths; a dry brush is all it needs.

The specimen measures 9.9 × 7.6 × 3.8 cm and weighs 235 g, and comes already mounted: a pale wooden block carries a steel post and two prongs that grip the matrix from behind, holding the crystal face up and forward. It arrives on the stand shown, and the photographs are of this piece alone.
