About this specimen
Flat calcite plates lie stacked and offset like slates sliding off a roof, each one a pale olive-green rhomb that turns translucent at its edges. Across the upper surfaces runs a crust of brick-red micro-crystals, dense in places and thinning to a rust dusting elsewhere, with ochre patches and near-black iron oxide filling the hollows between plates. Nothing here was cut or shaped — the stepped tower is simply how the crystals grew.
Stacked calcite of this kind forms when each successive plate nucleates slightly off-centre on the one below, so every new rhomb overhangs the last. The red coating arrived afterwards, when iron-rich solutions moved through the cavity and precipitated on exposed faces, which is why the sheltered undersides stay green and clean. Calcite is Mohs 3 and the delicate crust will rub away under a fingertip: dry soft brush only, never water.
