圓潤的麥稈黃色小丘擠在這片標本的中央，數十枚之多，卻沒有一枚是光滑的：每一枚小丘都是一束小晶體，彼此相接之處閃著刻面，所以轉動標本時表面會不斷閃爍。它們坐落在一片白堊色的板狀晶體之中，那層晶體向板面其餘部分展開，覆蓋較薄之處露出板岩灰的岩石。
葡萄狀方解石形成於成核密集、生長迅速之處：不是長出幾枚大菱面體，而是成千上萬枚小晶體爭奪空間，集合體因而自行圓化。黃石的大冶礦是一座開採已久的鐵銅礦床，其碳酸鹽晶洞是湖北方解石的常見來源。莫氏硬度 3 加上三個方向的完全解理，這是一種要托著母岩拿取、並與任何更硬之物分開存放的礦種。
板面尺寸 5.3 × 3.3 × 2.0 cm，重 26 g——薄得足以收進抽屜，也體面得可以擺上層架。不附底座。照片中的這片標本，就是您將收到的那一片。
