白色鍍層幾乎覆蓋了這件福建標本的全部表面，螢石只在局部透出：這裡一個淡紫色的立方晶面，那裡一組色調更深的灰紫色晶面，還有鍍層始終未曾抵達的陰影凹處。這層鍍層是晶簇狀石英，數以千計的微小晶尖散射光線，使晶簇呈現霜糖般的質感，而非玻璃般的光澤。鋒利的立方稜邊仍在其下顯現。
這是一件分兩階段形成的標本，值得按順序解讀。螢石先行結晶，構築出立方體；其後含矽流體流經同一晶洞，在每一處裸露表面撒上石英。這種效果在藏家之間評價兩極——它掩去了透明度，卻明白記錄下生成的順序，而且霜層為柔軟的螢石（莫氏硬度 4）罩上一層更硬的外殼。試著背光觀察：鍍層最薄之處，淡紫色便會甦醒。
