橄欖金色的重晶石板狀晶體像鱗片般層層交疊，鋪滿這件江西礦板的整個正面，每一片的尖端都夠玻璃質，足以反射出一道高光。一道乳白色方解石礦脈橫切過金色晶面的中段，質地細如砂糖且不透明，右下方另有一塊方解石破面而出。
重晶石（BaSO4）就是舊時礦業用語中的「重晶」：比重超過 4.4，意味著這麼大一塊礦板落在掌心時，比眼睛預估的更沉。此處厚實的板狀晶體正是它的經典晶習。方解石（CaCO3）與它同居一板，硬度也相近——重晶石在摩氏硬度 3 至 3.5，方解石為 3——因此請把標本放在不會有更硬物件摩擦到那些板尖的地方。
