兩片琥珀色的薄晶自同一基部升起，構成一個淺淺的 V 形，像一對正要展開的翅膀。每片薄晶沿長度方向帶有細密的生長階梯紋，因此邊緣看起來像鋸齒，表面則以一道道橫向的光階留住光線。顏色從接合處近乎無色，漸深至尖端的溫暖金黃，兩片薄晶都通透得能在背光下發亮。
方解石極易形成雙晶，而共用一個接觸面的成對晶體，正是湖北大冶礦床反覆出現的特徵。階梯狀的晶面記錄了漸進式的生長，每一道階梯都是碳酸鹽供應的一次短暫停頓。別忘了它的柔軟：莫氏硬度 3、三個方向解理，而像這樣的薄片比任何其他方解石形態都更容易崩損。請給它一個不會有東西掉落砸中的層架。
這對晶體跨幅 3.6 × 1.8 × 3.6 cm，僅重 20 g，安置在一塊透明壓克力展示方座上。這樣的晶體沒有兩件長得一樣；照片所示即為這一件，連同它的方座。
