橄欖綠色的石榴石鑲嵌在一塊炭灰色的岩板上，最大的幾顆擠在右緣結成鬆散的一團，零星的單晶則散落過整個表面。每一顆都是稜角分明的菱形十二面體，只要光線落在晶面上便如玻璃般發亮，旁邊還有幾片深藍綠色的板狀晶體與細小的無色晶體相伴。岩板邊緣因岩石風化而泛著赭色。
廣西的鈣鐵榴石出自接觸變質的矽卡岩，循環的流體把石灰岩改造成鈣鐵矽酸鹽。其中的鐵，正是把顏色推向橄欖綠與草綠的原因。石榴石莫氏硬度 6.5–7.5 且無解理，是收藏架上較堅韌的礦種之一；在這件標本上，需要小心對待的是易碎的深色母岩，而非晶體。
