雕刻師順著石材本身的紋理走向下刀，而非與之對抗。一道奶白色的脈紋橫過眉骨並落入面頰，深綠色的斑塊落在太陽穴的位置，其上方的顱面則由磚紅轉為栗紅。眼窩鑿得又深又圓，齒列以緊密的格紋刻在拋光至能反光的下顎上。
石榴石是一族矽酸鹽而非單一礦種，此處使用的塊狀紅色石材比多數寶石材料更耐雕刻工具：硬度 6.5 至 7.5，各方向皆無解理，貝殼狀斷口拋光時不會崩粒。貫穿其中的淡色與綠色條帶是母岩裡的其他礦物，因此表面轉動時光澤也隨之改變：紅石榴石的光澤比一旁的奶白色區域更為潤亮。
頭骨尺寸 9.1 × 7.6 × 5.8 cm，重 885 g，以其體積而言相當沉手，握在手中十分紮實；照片中立於透明的圓形展示盤上。斑駁的石材雕不出兩件相同的頭骨，而這一件正是照片所拍攝的那件。
