一座白色圓丘，一頂琥珀色方解石王冠——一句話就是這件標本。方解石晶體呈板狀、邊緣如透鏡，顏色像淡茶，其中幾顆通透到能看見內部生長條紋的影子；晶體之間的母岩則是深褐而帶土氣。整個下半部是一層緊密的、細如砂糖的石英細晶簇，唯有沿著最底部，才有一圈薄薄的綠色螢石透出來。
這樣的層序才是這件標本真正的看點。綠色螢石最先生成，如今幾乎被完全掩埋；接著一波矽質把它裹上微晶石英；方解石最後生長，覆在一切之上。能從一件 3.6 cm 的拇指標本上直接讀出三段生長序列，正是放大鏡存在的理由。拿取時請照最軟的那個成分來對待——方解石莫氏硬度 3，接觸任何酸性物質都會被蝕刻，包括醋與家用清潔劑。
