關於此標本
整塊標本板鋪滿煙灰色方解石，板上幾乎每一顆晶體都披著一層黑色赤鐵礦晶殼，閃爍如碎煤。在深色斑塊之間，這層包覆變薄，轉為磚紅與鮭紅；底下的方解石則隨著被覆蓋的厚薄，由近乎無色過渡到暴風雲般的灰。板面橫幅達 14 cm，正好盈滿一手。
這兩種顏色其實來自同一種礦物。赤鐵礦（Fe2O3）結晶時形成黑色金屬光澤的板狀晶體，粉化與被覆時卻呈紅赭色——這也是為什麼無論外觀多黑，赤鐵礦的條痕永遠是紅棕色。作為基底的方解石硬度僅莫氏 3，且具三個方向的解理，因此請由下方托住整塊標本，別捏著晶體尖端。
尺寸 14.0 × 11.4 × 5.1 cm，重 785 g，以裸置方式陳列，未附底座。全部照片拍攝的都是這一塊標本板。
