假象赤鐵礦是收藏者對交代磁鐵礦而成的赤鐵礦的稱呼，它保留了原礦物的外形，化學成分卻已轉為 Fe2O3。內蒙古出產的這類標本正帶有這種明亮的雲母狀光澤。此件未經任何琢磨，閃光完全來自天然的鱗片生長。請保持乾燥——濕布擦過赤鐵礦會留下鏽紅色的抹痕。
體積雖小卻結實沉手，4.6 × 2.3 × 3.6 cm，100 g。隨件附上照片中所見的小塊透明壓克力座，以白色黏土固定；那些照片拍攝的正是此件標本。
