About this specimen
Guangdong, specular hematite with quartz at 3.8 cm; a miniature, supplied on the acrylic stand shown. Specular hematite blades fan outward in a broad flower of black metallic plates, with small white quartz crystals grown in beneath them at the base.
Specularite forms glittering steel-grey plates, the iron oxide that makes so much Guangdong quartz sparkle.
Good quartz is about hexagonal prisms with clean terminations and the glassy lustre that lets a cluster catch light from every angle.
Guangdong is the source of the red hematoid quartz and green phantom quartz that reached collectors after 2015.
