About this specimen
Jinlong, Guangdong, specular hematite at 2.4 cm; a thumbnail, supplied on the acrylic stand shown. Specular hematite grown as a flower of dark metallic blades, the plates overlapping outward from a common centre with a white crust showing between them at the base.
Specularite forms glittering steel-grey plates, the iron oxide that makes so much Guangdong quartz sparkle.
Guangdong's Jinlong district is known for hematoid and chlorite-phantom quartz with specular hematite, alongside fluorite and calcite.
