About this specimen

Thousands of hair-fine hematite blades fan from a single origin on this small Bayan Obo piece, and the sheen slides over them as it turns: silver at one angle, dead black at the next. The dome they build stands under 4 cm tall, yet the surface behaves like brushed steel rather than like a mineral, every blade catching the light a fraction of a second after its neighbour.

Hematite is iron oxide, Fe2O3, and the specular variety grows in these thin micaceous plates instead of the usual dull massive habit. However metallic it looks, drag it across unglazed porcelain and the streak comes off red-brown — the oldest reliable test in the field kit. Bayan Obo, in Inner Mongolia, is best known as an iron and rare-earth district, and its specularite carries this particular satin, fibrous finish.

4.3 × 3.0 × 3.8 cm and 65 g, with a rim of small colourless crystals and ochre dust around the base where it parted from the pocket wall. It stands on the small display block seen in the images, which record this specimen alone.

Can I return it?

Yes — there is a 14-day return window.
