About this specimen
Jinlong, Guangdong, specular hematite with quartz at 3 cm; a miniature, supplied in the display box shown. Specular hematite grown as a rosette of dark metallic blades, with a clear quartz crystal lying against its base and catching the light through the black plates.
Specularite forms glittering steel-grey plates, the iron oxide that makes so much Guangdong quartz sparkle.
Rock crystal is judged on termination quality, clarity and how the crystals sit together, and the Chinese localities have raised the bar on all three.
Guangdong's Jinlong district is known for hematoid and chlorite-phantom quartz with specular hematite, alongside fluorite and calcite.
The piece is miniature in size, 3 × 2.5 × 1.7 cm (1.18 × 0.98 × 0.67 in). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.
