About this specimen
Jinlong, Guangdong, quartz with specular hematite at 3.7 cm; a miniature, supplied on the acrylic stand shown. Long, slender quartz points rise in a fan from a dark base of specular hematite, the crystals water-clear along their length and the hematite showing its metallic flash between them.
Specularite forms glittering steel-grey plates, the iron oxide that makes so much Guangdong quartz sparkle.
Rock crystal is judged on termination quality, clarity and how the crystals sit together, and the Chinese localities have raised the bar on all three.
Guangdong's Jinlong district is known for hematoid and chlorite-phantom quartz with specular hematite, alongside fluorite and calcite.
