About this specimen
Inner Mongolia, specular hematite with quartz at 2 cm; a thumbnail, supplied on the acrylic stand shown. A rosette of dark metallic hematite blades sits at the centre of a crusted matrix, with small quartz points and yellow-brown crystals scattered around it.
Specularite forms glittering steel-grey plates, the iron oxide that makes so much Guangdong quartz sparkle.
Quartz is the most collected mineral on earth for good reason: sharp hexagonal prisms, bright terminations and endless variation between localities.
Inner Mongolia's Huanggang and Chifeng districts produce fluorite, calcite, garnet and rhodochrosite in a lustre and clarity that set the modern standard for Chinese carbonates.
