關於此標本
這塊淡奶油色母岩構成的低矮丘體只比核桃大一點，表面卻披掛著銹化出整段光譜的黃銅礦晶體：凹陷處是古銅與舊金，外露的晶面上是玫瑰紅與洋紅，薄膜最薄的地方則閃出青綠與紫羅蘭。右上方一顆較大的晶體集其大成：一片寬闊的楔形晶面，在單一面上由銅粉紅經金色一路過渡到紫色。
這些顏色並非色素，而是干涉。黃銅礦，CuFeS2，風化後會生成僅有數奈米厚的氧化薄膜，光線在薄膜的上下表面反射後，於不同波長上彼此抵消或增強——與濕柏油路面上一層油膜的物理原理相同。正因為薄膜如此之薄，它極易被抹去：不要用布、不要超音波清洗、不要接觸酸。乾燥的空氣與一支軟毛刷就是它的全部所需。
尺寸 5.6 × 3.3 × 3.8 cm、79 g，小巧緊湊，產自江西德興，可置於掌心，在燈下慢慢轉動最能回報目光。不附底座；此處拍攝的暈彩銹色，就是這件標本自身的顏色。
