這件標本的正面綴滿數十顆水清透明的方解石晶體，小的僅數毫米如珠，最大的一顆位於中央，呈塊狀，接近兩公分，晶面層層退階，玻璃光澤足以映出一道高光。它們生長在池水般顏色的母岩上——深色岩石表面覆著一層灰綠色的綠泥石薄皮——而暗沉的基質與明亮的晶體之間的對比，正是這件標本全部的魅力所在。
方解石是碳酸鈣，CaCO3，也是礦物界的變形者：已記載的晶形比任何其他礦種都多，從刀鋒般的偏三角面體，到這裡所見矮胖圓潤的形態皆有。它質地柔軟，莫氏硬度 3，並在三個斜交方向上具完全解理，因此磕碰往往會整齊地剝下一塊菱面體，而不是崩出缺口。請讓它遠離任何酸性物質；即使只是醋的氣味，也會蝕去晶面的光澤。
