湊近細看，這裡的金色根本不是一撒立方體：它是一層比砂糖顆粒大不了多少的黃鐵礦晶簇，鋪展在一床渾圓的奶白色白雲石之上。這層覆蓋緊貼著底下碳酸鹽的每一處凸起與凹陷，因此標本板以橄欖黃銅的色調閃爍，最輕微的轉動都會使它變化，而少數幾顆裸露的白雲石晶體則像淺色的卵石般頂出結殼。
這類細粒黃鐵礦晶簇形成得晚，是在冷卻中的含硫化物流體漫過已經結晶完成的碳酸鹽時發生的——這也正是黃鐵礦如此忠實地複製了白雲石表面的原因。黃鐵礦的化學式為 FeS2，莫氏硬度 6 至 6.5，硬，但化學性質不安分：請存放於乾燥處，並遠離潮濕的棉花，因為濕氣正是硫化物劣化的起點。
