細長的石英晶尖自一道低矮的白色脊部升起，離開母岩處無色，接近晶尖則轉為柔和的淡紫，晶體內部還懸著一道更深的紫色條帶，像被封進玻璃裡的陰影。其下一層較扁平、較霜白的晶體向左延展，並逐漸變薄成淡色的晶簇薄殼，覆在鏽褐色的岩石上。
石英是 SiO2，屬三方晶系，莫氏硬度 7——硬得可以毫無顧慮地拿取，而收藏架上多數東西並非如此。色調偏在晶尖一端，正是顏色在晶體生長後期才被開啟的慣常印記。與所有紫色石英一樣，多年的強烈日照會讓它褪色，因此陳列時請遠離直射日光。奇瓦瓦州的奈卡礦更為人知的是規模驚人的石膏；像這樣的標本，則來自它遠為樸素的晶洞。
