一顆桃花心木紅的晶體橫臥在這塊大冶岩板上，像一艘擱淺的船身——晶面因鐵氧化物而呈霧面，稜線筆直如刀鋒，一道長長的龍骨脊在光線游走其上時挑起一線細金。它的下方與四周，是一床淡琥珀色的方解石，尖端泛桃色、凹處近乎無色，承著它的重量。
大冶是鐵與銅的地界，顏色正是由此而來：生長期間吸收的細微鐵氧化物把大晶體染成牛血色，而底下較晚、較乾淨的一代則保持蜂蜜般的淡色。一顆霧面的大晶體臥在明亮的晶簇床上，是一種隔著房間也讀得出來的構圖。方解石（CaCO3）莫氏硬度僅 3，沿三個方向完全解理，並且一接觸任何酸性物質就會被蝕刻——包括在上面停留太久的指尖。
以 12.7 × 12.4 × 5.6 cm、525 g 而言，這是一件真正的陳列級標本，而非拇指石。它不附座運送，而這些畫面只拍了這一塊岩板。
