關於此標本
粗壯的方解石晶體在這塊大冶標本上層層交疊，像被推擠上河岸的冰板，每一顆都以銳利的鑿刃狀晶端收尾，而非收成尖角。轉動它，顏色隨之改變：左側是霜白的乳色，接著在最大的晶體處轉為煙灰而近乎清澈，內部的生長線在此顯現為細密的平行筆觸。沿著下緣，一道蜜橙色晶體與深色顆粒組成的條帶，為整個底部添上暖意。
方解石（CaCO3）柔軟，莫氏硬度 3，並沿三個方向乾淨解理，因此它要的是一個架位，而不是口袋。湖北的大冶礦區是一個矽卡岩系統，其方解石帶有足夠的微量錳，使得在短波紫外光下出現粉紅至紅色的反應相當常見——在您向誰誇口之前，值得先用自己的燈試一試。
