菱面體如屋瓦般堆疊：這件郴州小型標本以一片片交疊的晶板向上構築，每一層都比前一層錯開一些，最後讓整組晶體長成一座小小的階梯狀塔樓。最上方數層帶著銅紅色的外皮，泛出淡淡的緞面光澤；其下同樣的晶形延續為奶白與淡玫瑰色，凡是風化不曾觸及的晶面，受光時都像玻璃一樣明亮。
這樣的階梯狀生長記錄著中斷。每一次供給的停頓都留下一道平台，平台再疊成梯田——這裡沒有任何切割或修整，形態完全是天然長成。方解石的化學式為 CaCO3，莫氏硬度僅 3，並沿三個方向完全解理：指甲即可劃傷，一滴醋就能蝕出痕跡，因此請以軟毛刷除塵，並讓任何酸性物質遠離。
尺寸 2.8 × 2.0 × 2.5 cm、重 15 g，是名副其實的小型標本，以黏土固定在拍攝所用的透明壓克力底座上，底座隨標本一同寄出。此處每一張照片拍的都是這一組晶體。
