關於此標本
一塊不比指甲更長的淺色鬆脆母岩，一端綻放出濃烈的洋紅色——帶紫調的菱錳礦，右側邊緣還冒出兩枚較小的淡紫色晶尖。結晶表面是啞光的糖霜質感而非玻璃光澤，因此顏色讀起來像顏料而不像反光；在灰色背景前，以這件標本的體積而言相當震撼。
菱錳礦是碳酸錳（MnCO3），錳佔據了方解石中鈣所在的結構位置；晶格容納的錳愈多，粉紅色就愈濃烈。莫氏硬度 3.5 至 4，很容易被刮傷，接觸酸類即會受蝕——包括一般家用清潔劑中的醋酸。乾式除塵即可，別再多做。
尺寸 3.6 × 1.3 × 2.3 cm，重 11 g，小到握拳即可完全藏起，送達時已用黏土膠固定在圖中的透明壓克力方塊上。照片所見即為您收到的標本。
