數以千計髮絲般細薄的赤鐵礦葉片，自單一起點在這件小巧的白雲鄂博標本上呈扇形展開，光澤隨轉動在其上滑移：一個角度是銀，下一個角度是死黑。它們堆起的穹頂高度不到 4 cm，表面的質感卻更像拉絲鋼而非礦物，每一片葉片都比鄰片慢上幾分之一秒才接住光線。
赤鐵礦是氧化鐵，Fe2O3，而鏡鐵礦這一變種長成的是這種雲母狀的薄片，而非常見的暗啞塊狀。無論看起來多麼金屬，把它在未上釉的瓷板上劃過，條痕都會是紅棕色——這是野外工具包裡最古老可靠的檢測。位於內蒙古的白雲鄂博以鐵與稀土礦區最為聞名，其產出的鏡鐵礦便帶著這種獨特的緞面纖維質感。
