Himmelblauer Hemimorphit ist hier in dichten, gewölbten Büscheln gewachsen, jedes eine Halbkugel aus Nadeln, die Schulter an Schulter stehen. Am tiefsten sammelt sich die Farbe in den Mulden zwischen den Kuppen – ein weiches, gleichmäßiges Türkis –, ehe sie an den Spitzen zu Frostweiß ausbleicht, sodass die Kruste von innen beleuchtet wirkt. Darunter bricht die dunkelbraune Unterlage in ockergelbe Streifen auf, wo das ursprüngliche Zinkerz verwittert ist.
Hemimorphit ist ein Zinksilikat, Zn4Si2O7(OH)2·H2O, das sich in den oxidierten oberen Bereichen von Zinklagerstätten bildet; das Blau wird im Allgemeinen einer Spur Kupfer zugeschrieben, die in der Struktur mitgeführt wird, und Yunnan ist das chinesische Fundgebiet dafür. Mit Mohshärte 4,5 bis 5 ist die Kruste fest genug, um sie mit einem weichen Pinsel zu entstauben, doch die Nadelspitzen sind spröde – ziehen Sie niemals ein Tuch darüber.
