Über diese Stufe
Ein dichter Knoten fast schwarzer Kassiterit-Kristalle krönt dieses kleine Stück aus Sichuan; die Flächen sind spiegelblank, werfen harte weiße Lichter zurück und lassen an den dünneren Kanten jenes rotbraune Glimmen durch, das das Mineral verrät. Oben stehen scharfe, einander durchdringende Endflächen dicht an dicht, während ein Bett silbrigweißer Tafelkristalle am Fuß entlangläuft und die Gruppe freistellt.
Kassiterit ist Zinndioxid, SnO2, und das wichtigste Zinnerz der Welt. Er kristallisiert tetragonal in kurzen Prismen und steilen Bipyramiden, die häufig zu knieförmigen Zwillingen zusammentreten – genau die Formen, die hier miteinander verknotet sind; Oktaeder bildet er nie. Mit Mohshärte 6–7 ist er hart und für seine Größe spürbar schwer, dazu von diamantenem bis halbmetallischem Glanz, weit heller, als die nahezu undurchsichtige Farbe vermuten lässt.
Kompakt mit 2,8 × 1,8 × 2,5 cm und 34 g. Die Gruppe wird auf dem hier gezeigten klaren Acrylblock geliefert, und diese Aufnahmen halten genau diese Kristallgruppe fest.
