Über diese Stufe
Der höchste Kristall dieser Vera-Cruz-Platte ist am Fuß wasserklar und an der Spitze voll violett, ein schlankes Prisma, das nahezu aufrecht von der Matrix absteht. Darum herum neigt sich ein loser Kranz kürzerer Spitzen nach außen – einige tiefviolett, einige kaum getönt, eine liegt flach über der Druse wie ein gefallener Mast. Der Wirt ist dunkelgraues Gestein, überzogen von einer blassen zuckrigen Kruste.
Amethyst aus Veracruz wird für genau diese Zurückhaltung geschätzt: dünne, glasige, scharf terminierte Prismen mit der Farbe zu den Spitzen hin gesammelt, ganz anders als das gesättigte, flächendeckende Violett des brasilianischen Geodenmaterials. Amethyst ist Quarz, SiO2, getönt durch Spuren von Eisen, die natürliche Strahlung über geologische Zeiträume hinweg angeschaltet hat. Diese Farbe ist lichtempfindlich: Halten Sie das Stück von einer sonnigen Fensterbank fern, dann behält es sein Violett auf Dauer.
