Sobre este espécimen
Dos carbonatos de cobre, dos temperamentos, sobre un mismo bloque vertical: malaquita verde aterciopelada en cojines botrioidales redondeados y una costra de azurita ultramar que se acumula en el lado derecho formando rosetas apretadas y azucaradas, tan saturadas que parecen iluminadas por detrás. El verde asciende hasta formar una pequeña aguja en la parte superior; el azul lo sigue como una marca de marea y vuelve a acumularse a lo largo de la repisa inferior, donde aún asoman algunas manchas más oscuras, de color gris pardo, de la roca madre.
La azurita, Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2, y la malaquita, Cu2CO3(OH)2, se diferencian por poco más que un grupo carbonato y una molécula de agua, y la azurita cede lentamente su lugar a la malaquita en aire húmedo. Ejemplares como este quedan atrapados a mitad de esa conversión, y de ahí procede el efecto de dos colores. Ambas son blandas, en torno a 3,5 a 4 en la escala de Mohs, y a ninguna de las dos le sientan bien los ácidos ni la limpieza en húmedo: solo desempolvado en seco.
El bloque mide 7,7 × 4,4 × 5,2 cm y pesa 147 g, y se sostiene por sí solo sobre su cara inferior plana, sin necesidad de base. Las fotografías se tomaron únicamente de este ejemplar.
