El tallista dejó en paz la mejor parte de la roca. El lomo del elefante se abre en una cavidad intacta donde cientos de cristales de un rojo granate oscuro se asientan sobre un lecho de drusa gris, relucientes como grava mojada; el resto del animal —oreja con líneas cruzadas, trompa recogida, patas macizas— está labrado en la piedra encajante gris, con vetas color herrumbre que cruzan el flanco y el ojo engastado con una piedra oscura pulida.
El granate cristaliza en el sistema cúbico, carece de exfoliación y se sitúa entre 6,5 y 7,5 en la escala de Mohs, y por eso los cristales alojados en una cavidad resguardada como esta conservan aristas tan vivas y caras tan brillantes. Construir una figura alrededor de una cavidad abierta es un problema más difícil que tallar una figurilla maciza: la cavidad decide hacia dónde puede ir el animal, y aquí se convirtió en la howdah sobre el lomo del elefante.
La pieza mide 11,4 × 8,6 × 6,9 cm y pesa 860 g, un objeto para dos manos con una base plana que no necesita soporte. Las fotografías corresponden únicamente a esta talla, no a una muestra representativa.
