Un barboncino se ne sta disteso, il mento sollevato e le guance incise in un sorriso morbido, e l'intagliatore ha fatto qualcosa di ingegnoso con la materia prima: il ciuffo bombato sulla testa e il pelo su spalle e fianchi sono lasciati allo stato naturale della pietra, zuccherino e color miele, mentre muso, petto e zampe sono lavorati fino a un bianco crema levigato. Una perla di onice nero lucidato prende il posto dell'occhio, lucente contro tutta quella tessitura opaca.
La divisione cromatica non è pittura ma la pietra stessa: una zona esterna macchiata di ferro, dal beige al ruggine, sopra un interno chiaro e cristallino. Intagliare fino a quel confine è tutta l'abilità richiesta: se si scende troppo il pelo sparisce, se ci si ferma troppo presto il muso resta confuso. Le superfici finite sono lasciate non lucidate e conservano una tessitura appena granulosa che rende in modo convincente l'idea del pelo.
Misura 11,4 × 4,6 × 10,2 cm e pesa 580 g, abbastanza pesante da stare saldo su una mensola senza alcun sostegno. L'animale che vede qui è l'animale che verrà imballato per la spedizione.
