この標本について
この標本はアメシストの単晶がすべてを担っています。母岩から少し傾いだ角度で、勢いよく立ち上がっています。先端はやわらかな菫色、葡萄を思わせる色合いで、柱の三分の一ほど下るとほぼ無色へ退いていきます。結晶面は明るく、傷はありません。足元の母岩は淡い灰緑色の皮殻で、褐色の薄片と小さな無色の結晶が散り、右下からはもう一本、小ぶりな菫色の結晶が突き出しています。
アメシストの色は、石英の格子に取り込まれた鉄が母岩中の自然放射線によって発色中心へと変わることで生まれます。その発色中心は成長の後半に育ちやすく、だからこの結晶のように菫色は先端付近に集まります。石英はモース硬度7と硬く、特別な扱いは要りません。ただし直射日光に長くさらすと、年月をかけて紫は褪せていきます。窓辺よりも、窓から離れた棚のほうが親切です。
3.8 × 3.2 × 3.0 cm、42 g とコンパクトで、写真にある透明アクリルのブロックに粘着パテで留めてお届けします。掲載写真はこの結晶一本を撮影したものです。
