この標本について
カーキからオリーブ色の板状結晶が、この貴州省産の標本の全面で互いに組み合っています。一枚一枚がレンズ形にわずかに反り、落ち葉が積もったように密に詰まっています。その隙間では、薄い白色の苦灰石の板が光を受け、緑の連なりを断ち切ります。全体の表面は明るいガラス光沢ではなく、蝋のような控えめな艶。見どころは、この組み合いの密度と、軍装を思わせる珍しい色合いにあります。
菱鉄鉱はFeCO3、鉄の炭酸塩で、ふつうは温かみのあるチョコレート色で出会うことの多い鉱物です。この板状結晶の緑がかった色調こそが、ありふれた菱面体の結晶とこの標本を分けています。菱鉄鉱のモース硬度は3.5〜4.5、隣り合う苦灰石（CaMg(CO3)2）は3.5〜4。どちらも酸に触れれば泡立ち、面が侵される軟らかい炭酸塩です。手入れは乾いた刷毛だけ、それより強い方法は使わないでください。
8.1 × 3.8 × 4.1 cm、170 gと細長い標本で、ケースの中では寝かせて置くのがいちばん収まります。スタンドは付属しません。掲載した写真はいずれもこの個体を撮影したもので、大きさがわかるよう手に持って撮っています。
